IKEA Trip

For the past couple of years the mister and I have been taking a day trip up to IKEA to stock up on some goodies during right before school starts...kinda like one last hurrah.  

We're obviously party people, can't ya tell?

In the past two years we have been accompanied by my brother and sister-in-law but they couldn't go because they had other plans...something like a Hawaii vacay. I mean, come on, lame excuse. But really, Maui, I miss you. 

Anyhoo, David is a peach for driving us up to the IKEA because just the drive alone is anywhere from 7-8 hours roundtrip. I know, he's a saint to put up with me.  

This year I had one main thing I wanted and that was the black and white striped rug. I almost walked away empty-handed but happened to see it while rounding the corner. David would've never let me down if we drove all the way up to IKEA just to eat Swedish meatballs and get my favorite cookies. 

We haven't put the rug down just yet, but I'll be sure to take some pictures when we do. It is very similar to the black and white rug that we have in the living room now but it is a little bigger and has less white [at least less big stripes of white], which is a definite plus for my blueberry-eatin' toddler.  So many blue finger prints everywhere.  Help me. 

I, also, for the first time in years and years, came across a fiddle leaf fig at an IKEA! 

I was super pumped because the one I scored randomly from Wal-Mart earlier in the year only has two leaves to its name. Yikes. It IS still living though so I'll take it!

I also scooped up this basket for it and the simple black piping and handles made me instantly love it!

While we're sizing this pic up, I recently added two new-to-me 50 cent thrifted needlepoints to the wall and they fit perfectly in the space. Plus, it's been forever since I've had Kleenex in the house but this Isaac Mizrahi designed box is perfect for our space! I finally found them at Wal-Mart of all places. I have the pink rose one, too, but it's at school. 

We also got some storage for my craft room -- if I ever get around to organizing it -- and we picked up two prints that I first spotted in the Young House Love show home. 

I'm not sold on where I want to put them just yet, but I think I've got an idea. Once they're up, I'll take some pics!

We rounded our day out at some thrift shops [Of course! I'm addicted, I think] and made a pit stop at Carter's where they are stepping up their game in a BIG way.  Kudos to them!

So that's it! School's getting ready to start and no matter how much I'd love summer to linger on I gotta get to working!

Light It Up [times three!]

We've lived for quite some time--nearly 9 months--with builder grade brass lighting that wasn't even properly hanging anymore in the dining room area and no lighting in the kitchen! As you can see, they had track lighting in the kitchen and we took that down immediately.  When they had a peninsula the track lighting was centered in the middle of the open space, but now since we took the peninsula out, the location of the lighting box doesn't make sense.

Once we tore down the wall [that you see below] in the eat-in kitchen the lighting position was no longer over an eating area. I knew I wanted to have an electrician come out and give us a bid on moving the locations of the boxes but I have been slow to contact one. Even when we finally did contact one he never called us back.  

I finally decided to just get the World Market lantern lights and call it a day.  For less than $300 for all three, I thought it was a pretty good deal to have functioning and easy on the eyes lighting once and for all.  It's funny because I just saw Young House Love sprung for the same pendants in their hallway, too!

I think because the lights are all the same it helps to give some purpose to their current location. My father-in-law did point out that all three are centered over the windows so that made me feel better, too.  Silly, I know.  And, like I said before, new upper cabinets are high on the priority list and now I'm thinking of moving the microwave to the pantry and getting a hood.  We shall see!

Of course there's still a chance that we'll get an electrician out here to give us a bid to move the kitchen/dining room lights, but I'd like him to first quote us a bid about putting a ceiling light in Theron's room, the same in the guest room, and two lights in the master bath.  Those are more of a priority in my book.

All in due time I suppose. It's hard when you have a wish list a mile long and a bank account that doesn't quite match. Haha!

Slowly but surely we're making some good progress! Next on our agenda is staining the table my father-in-law made for us! The buyers of our first home negotiated that the first table stay with the house, so my FIL made a bigger and better one for this space. He's pretty amazing, guys.

This and That

I will forever struggle at making blog titles. When it's just a simple post [which all of mine have been of late--real life] I get stumped. How many times can I say "House Update!"? Haha!

Anyhoo, this is just a small house update--of course--and I can really say I'm starting to love how it's coming along. The house is getting in its groove. Cheesy but true.

The entryway is coming along and I am totally digging it! The bench we got the other day really sealed the deal. I added some pillows I got from Ikea and H&M and it's even better!  I'm a fan of layering in home decor and it's looking good to my eye finally. The only thing I need to do is paint that doorbell box. I always say I'll do it and then I get distracted. I feel like I'm super scattered because I gotta make the most out of nap time. Ya dig, mommas?

We also added a little greenery [which I'll no doubt kill] and it instantly perks things up as well! 

And on a side note, randomly, on Sunday,  I was bad-mouthing the midwest and their lack of fiddle leaf figs for YEARS to the workers at Home Depot.  The nursery employees didn't even know what they were -- decor bloggers they were not. Haha!! So, same old story, I came home with two random house plants like always.  Later that night I was at Walmart and saw a whole slew of fiddle leaf figs just hanging out on the shelf.  Never in my many years of looking for them had I ever found them.  But here they were taunting me, in my own city.  Those clever little stinkers! I, of course, bought one and am headed back for another asap.  I'm sure their fate is not the best with me.  Whoops. Sorry in advance, little buddy.

I placed it in the living room for now but I really need to read up on their care and take serious steps to get this baby to grow.

And, while we're at it, I also added this H&M pillow to the green chair.  If you haven't checked out the H&M line you really should. It's good stuff!

Entryway Update

For some reason, the past couple months I have taken a break from craigslist. Who knows why?? Maybe I was actually productive in my spare time rather than dreaming of all the furniture I don't have a place for--haha! But very recently, I wanted a bench to go in our entryway and I found one for under $100 via craigslist at a new-to-me consignment store. Wins all the way around.

The top isn't in the greatest condition but it really doesn't bother me at all. Theron's favorite new trick is to climb on top and look at all of his pictures. He can identify everyone and everything and it's just about the cutest. I think I'll keep him.

On another note, we added a new World Market light to the dining room area and I have to remember to snap some pics for you later.

I have a couple more of the same light coming via raincheck and I think they will be nice placeholders until I can get the electric moved and centered.  If you remember, we tore down a wall, so the original lighting location doesn't really make sense with the new layout all that much.  These lights were $100 a pop and they could stay for the long haul even so.  Since July we've been living with shiny builder grade brass lighting and a lack of lighting completely in the kitchen.   I guess it's pretty obvious that we're not awesome chefs.

So, as soon as those updates happen, you'll be in the know.  Any fun updates happening in your neck of the woods? I'm yearning for some inspiration!

DIY: Young, Wild, & Free

I may not be creative, but when I see a good idea I sure can find a way to recreate it! Haha!

The other day, you know, before Snowmageddon 2014, I bundled up for what I thought would be one of my last days of break for a girls' day!  I joined my sweet Maw Maw for pedicures, lunch and shopping and then met two of my most dear friends for lunch and catching up. So good for the soul. 

I posted the above [albeit fuzzy] pic on Instagram [@Joidan82] and I really wish you could see my shoes! I found them [on accident] at Journeys for Kids and they have the best leopard detailing on the side. Who knew my size 8.5 foot could fit into girls' sized shoes. Duly noted!

After lunch we stopped at TJ Maxx and Marshall's and found this cute little sign.

I loved it for Theron's room and it wasn't expensive at all.  I think it was less than $10.  However, the fonts weren't doing it for me.  

I snapped a picture of it on my iPhone--seriously, how convenient is life in 2014?!--and decided to make my own version at home.  

I've made a lot of copycat images at home on PowerPoint but this time I used PicMonkey.  I LOVE PicMonkey.  I pay the $4.99 a month for the premium membership and it is totally worth it. I would say I use it just as much, if not more, than I use my photoshop.  It's so user friendly and easy to navigate. And, this is not an ad for them--promise!

To make my own version I simply downloaded a free chalkboard background via a google search, and used the available fonts on PicMonkey.  I played around with the sizing and saved my image. It only took about an hour or so.  I uploaded it to Walgreens and spent less than $3 printing it out in a 5x7. 

I used one of the tens of frames I had in the basement and planned on hanging it in Theron's room.  But after I saw it, I knew it'd look best smack dab on the TV wall in the living room next to our "This is so the happy place" DIY copycat art.  David and I like to think we're 'Young, Wild & Free" but Theron Drake actually lives it. Ha!

I think I need a nice green plant atop that brass Target table for some height!

Christmas Came Early

Thank you a million times over for commenting on my last post.  You guys are seriously so supportive and nonjudgmental and I was brought to tears again by your most thoughtful sentiments! I don't know how to explain how much your kind words mean to me.  Love you guys! 

A few weeks back RedEnvelope contacted me to try out one of their fabulous gifts.  I searched around on their website, throughout their personalized products & wedding and anniversary gifts, and fell in love with this print.

Its message is simple and made me smile. No matter where life takes us, as long as we're together, we're 'home'.  Sappytown, party of one.  Haha!

The print was shipped lightning fast and came beautifully packaged.

When I opened it I felt like I was in a movie.  You know the ones, where the gift is adorned with a bow that slips right off of the package ever so slowly and there's no wrapping paper.  It was lovely.  I saved the box to use for a gift during Christmas--shhh.

The 11x14 print was professionally framed in a white frame but you have other options available as well.

I placed it on the countertop to get a good shot of it and minimize the glare.

It looks like something you'd find off of Etsy and that's a good thing!  I don't know about you, but I like to have pieces with meaning that aren't purchased by everybody and their brother.

Ultimately, I thought it would look best on the ever-expanding TV gallery wall.  It almost looks like it was meant for the space.  It honestly fit perfectly!

One Month: My Baby Must-Haves

When I was pregnant I scoured the internet for mommy blogger must-haves and questioned my best friend, Cori, about her baby faves. I saved lists/items/gadgets to pinterest and made wish lists on Amazon. I wanted to be as prepared as humanly possible and wanted to know what I could possibly need/not live without. It was fun and just a bit overwhelming! It's a good thing love me some shopping,

Fast forward a few months and I am flabbergasted at how fast time flies! I am so happy to say we made it through Theron's first month and now I have a group of my one month favorites. Crazy to think I'm a mommy. Still. so.weird. My picks below have truly been a life saver in many ways and I recommend them to you future mommies out there who may be overwhelmed with the never ending choices you're faced with while registering and/or shopping {being overwhelmed is more like it!} at Babies R Us.

Let's get to the goodies, shall we?

1. This is my favorite thing of all of the items, the Baby Connect App. Thank you modern technology! What you see above is a screen shot of an absolutely awesome app for your phone. It has been invaluable to David and me. I use it to track T's weight & stats, save doctor's appointments/questions, track his feedings & diaper changes {very important--since he's getting breast milk it's incredibly important to keep count of his wet ones!}. It times everything out, has charts and customizable screens...I could go on forever. Seriously, please invest in this app if it's the one thing you buy. : )

2. The boppy. Does this really need an intro? It goes with me from the bedroom to the couch every.single. day. It keeps the little dude propped in place during those marathon-around-the-clock feedings.

3. Our stroller, the 2011 UppaBaby Vista {Mica}. I've loved this stroller for years, literally. While some may scoff at the price, it honestly did not matter to me and did not deter me from wanting it. I say that because I saved my mypoints for Amazon giftcards for years before I got pregnant knowing that this stroller is what I would someday spend them on. Plus, David's parents generously gifted us the remainder of what my gift cards {accumulated over 5 years of never cashing them in} didn't cover. David and I have already taken Theron on numerous walks and we love the UppaBaby. Right now T's in the bassinet feature and looks all comfy on his little jaunts. I can't say enough good things about this stroller. It was and is love.

4. SwaddleMe blankets. We registered for these not knowing if we'd use them or not. In fact, for the first couple weeks we didn't use them. Then one night, I convinced David that Theron needed a bedtime routine and that maybe swaddling should be a part of it. I don't know if Theron's a fan of them or not but I do know he sleeps a solid chunk of time being in these bad boys. He occasionally busts one or both of his arms out but mostly stays all wrapped up like a little burrito.

5. The Sleep Giraffe. This is another piece that's become part of our bedtime routine. Again, I don't know if T likes it or not but we turn it on every.single. night. My favorite sound is the white noise and if it's part of the equation for him sleeping two 3-4 hour stretches then I will gladly keep Mr. Giraffe doing his thing!

6. The Cloud B Twilight Turtle. Again, this is another item that's become a part of our bedtime routine. We make sure to turn it on before we put Theron in his crib and it lights up the whole room. Theron's been a pretty great sleeper since birth so if the turtle is helping the turtle can stick around!

7. The Newborn Lounger. I didn't even know this thing existed until David insisted we get it. He had heard from one of his coworkers that it was a staple item. I must strongly agree with that person. For the first two weeks Theron would nap here and hang out here all of the time. As he started getting more alert and fussy, he wasn't as big a fan of it. I still use it for him during my showers and sometimes during his naps. Theron can be sound asleep on me after a feeding and when I go to place him on the lounger he wakes up and wants back in my arms. We still really love it because it is so light, comfortable, and most of all useful.

8. The AngelCare Monitor. This came highly recommended from two friends that have babies of their own. I am obsessed with this monitor and am so glad we registered for it. It has a temperature display {so I know his room is always kept between 67-72 degrees} and a breathing monitor to let me know little T is still ok in his crib. It gives me peace of mind and I would almost pay anything for that. While I was pregnant I had planned on Theron sleeping in the Rock N Play next to our bed for sometime but one night I was up reading the Amazon reviews and could not shake the negative ones. So that same night {very early on} we moved Theron to his crib {Dave slept on the floor} and he's been a champ in there ever since. This happened a whole heck of a lot sooner than I had planned and I'm comforted by the fact that our house is so small and his room is right across the hall. I'm super paranoid about him but thankfully I think this will be the best option for all of us now and down the line.

9. Diapers {with the wet stripe indicator}. David and I plan on using reusable diapers when Theron gets a little bigger but we found ourselves loving any diaper brand with the wet indicator stripe. I have been a freak about charting all of T's dirty and wet diapers since I am breastfeeding and that's really the only way to know if he's staying hydrated and fed. The wet stripe really helped David and I tell what was happening in that little ol' diaper. : )

10. Hand Sanitizer Dispenser. I saw this idea on Pinterest and thought, "that's cute!" I never thought I'd use it as much as we do! We use it every single time we do a diaper change and really many other times too. It looks so much prettier than some old plastic bottle and I'm glad Pinterest showed me the idea.

11. Aden + Anais Blankets. I had read numerous bloggers gushing over these but didn't think about registering for them. I fell in love with the skull and star pattern via 77 Kids and ordered them primarily for that reason. While we don't use them to swaddle, we do use them to cover the carseat, as a blanket, and as a pillow to prop T's head up to nurse. They are breathable and light and I love their versatility.

12. Shea Moisture Organic Ointment. I just discovered this goodness the other day at Walgreen's. I picked it up to have more diaper ointment on hand and was pleasantly surprised by the fresh scent. I am so in love with it that I am going to order the body cream and wash for myself. It is divine. -->Update: Theron just got a little bum rash and unfortunately this stuff smelled amazing but didn't do the healing as good as our Butt Paste. I still love this ointment for a moisturizer and smell good, but it's not cutting it as a healer.

13. Nursing Tanks. Oh, breastfeeding. I could seriously talk your ear off with my feelings about breastfeeding. It has been a complete emotional rollercoaster. I am pleased to say I have made it over a month breastfeeding and am continuing to take each day as it comes. It's hard--that is no joke. These nursing tanks are amazing and I wear them every single day. I love that it allows only the breast to be exposed but keep the rest of you covered. I highly recommend them for home and at the hospital.

14. Newborn Size Clothes. This probably seems obvious to many of you but it wasn't to David and me. So many people advised us to pass on newborn clothes and we did. However, Theron is a month old, nearly 10 pounds, and still too little for most of his 0-3 clothes. I wish we would have purchased more newborn sized items but I guess you live and learn.

15. Munchkin Disposable Pads. My best friend, Cori, had sent these to me as a recommendation to use on the changing pad cover. These have been wonderful for us. For a couple weeks, Theron would pee and poop every single time we changed him. The boy was super fond of his open air accidents. David and I found ourselves washing the two changing pad covers all of the time. With these disposable pads we can just place them directly on top of the covers and keep them safe from those accidents. The pads aren't super cheap but totally worth it.

16. Medela Lanolin. To help soothe my body during those first weeks of breastfeeding this cream was superb. I also used the Lansinoh version but the Medela version is so much softer and gentler. And since the main reason you're using it is for the sensitivity, this Medela version is a no-brainer.

My New Addiction

Well it seems as if I've found myself a new hobby. Since I can't very well shop for my own body at this stage of the game, I've resorted to buying stuff for our little guy on the way. As most of you know I take a weekly trip to two of my favorite thrift stores in the town I teach in. I used to search for home decor items and now I make a bee-line straight to the baby clothes. The past 4 weeks or so I think I've scored pretty big!

I've purchased numerous items from Baby Gap, Old Navy, Target, The Children's Place, and other brands I'm not so familiar with. Most of the stuff I buy is around $1 a piece and some I've even scored for about 50 cents a piece. Suh-weet!

I don't feel so bad that the total amount I've spent on baby T's hauls is less than what I would spend on just one or two pieces for myself.

While baby boy clothes certainly don't get as much attention as the little girl pieces, I thoroughly enjoy hunting for the really cute baby boy stuff! It's almost like a little game to me.

Now, if Baby boy comes out a she...well then "she's" going to be one heck of a tom-boy dressed in boy clothes and a pink bow. ; )

A New Toy: Wide Angle Lens + 'Before' Nursery Shots

Our house is extremely small and cozy. Getting pictures of our rooms proves to be troublesome a lot of the time. The other month or so I was reading my girl Sara's blog and immediately became enamored with her new wide angle lens that allowed her to shoot angles of her home that revealed so much.

I put buying this lens on hold for so long but then finally bit the bullet fully realizing I would want to take pictures of the nursery very, very soon! And, with it being the smallest room besides the bathroom, getting shots would be quite difficult.

The nursery is soclose to being done and really we are just waiting for the glider to be shipped and then I can hang all of the art and make last minute furniture arrangements.

For the curious, this is what we started with:

Much has changed and I can't wait to reveal it! And, if you're interested, I am going to sell my Urban Outfitters light you see in the pics. I don't know if anyone will want it, but I'll list it on the 'for sale' page soon.

But, I do have some fun pics of some spaces that I took with our new lens. It obviously distorts the image slightly {and I gotta learn to focus better} but that's ok with me...I love getting to see so much in one shot! : )

Still Addicted To Chevron

So it seems as if I can't keep from buying chevron printed items. Just when I thought I was so over it, Target comes out with some things that I felt like I had to have. You know the drill, right?

The other day my mom texted me an image of all these chevron storage bins and I immediately thought how great the large lidded one would look in the nursery.

She picked up the only one she saw and this weekend I picked up two more. They look great in the little dude's custom closet. : )

Next up I found these dishtowels. I always need something nice for when people are over to dry their hands in the bathroom and these fit the bill beautifully.

One of my students had a great pair of folders in class and of course, I had to go and get those too. Why I need folders is beyond me...we'll just say since I'm a teacher it makes sense. : )

Of course I didn't stop there...I saw this gold and cream chevron pillow online and found it at my local Target. It's pretty in person, a bit more champagne than gold, and for right now it's home is in our master bedroom on our new bench. I thought about using it on the glider in the nursery...who knows where its permanent home will be.

I didn't need any of these fun little finds but what's the fun in needing everything you buy? : )

Another Master Bedroom Update

I know you guys are probably sick of my never-ending master bedroom additions. Each week it seems like I'm adding this and/or that. There are still a couple of things I need to do and share with all of you so I hope you'll stay tuned.

Ever since I decided to makeover the master bedroom {for the third or fourth time...it's a sickness I tell ya} I've wanted a Greek key throw for the end of the bed.

I saw one here and most recently at Furbish, but I wasn't sold on the over $100 price tag.

Even more recently I found another option that I loved but still couldn't bite the bullet and fork over $135 for the blanket.

Both throws are beautiful and so perfect for our space, but with two doggies that sleep with us I just could not justify the cost.

Enter this past weekend, I was shopping on Saturday during my family's annual all-day shopping extravaganza and found a perfect throw that mimics the feeling of the pricier version above.

I saw it at TJ Maxx and immediately scooped it up. I thank my mom for carrying it around for me since I've been put on doctor's orders to take it easy and discontinue carrying pretty much anything.

The throw is more of a quilt and only set me back $40! Hooray for a good deal. I almost feel like Sabrina Soto from The High-Low Project. {P.S. I've really been feeling her show lately!}

I'm really happy with the way it looks in our bedroom and I can't wait to make the other minor updates and blog about them very soon.

Tuesday Randoms

This weekend was wonderful! David and I got to see some friends that we don't see enough and that was just what we needed. Friday day + night exhausted me but the 12 hours of sleep I received made it better.

Saturday we we caught up with one of my dearest friends, Anna, at lunch at Steak N' Shake and then we did a little shopping at Target. We ventured to the little boy clothing section and picked up some digs for our baby boy. What a trip--it's still very surreal.

I also picked up this cute Kate Spade-esque bag for my school stuff.

Dave makes fun of me because I get a new school bag every year but I just can't seem to find the one. They're either too slouchy, too big, or something else that doesn't work for me. This was only $15 or so and I figured it couldn't hurt to try yet another option. I'm listing my former green school bag in the "for sale" {UPDATE--> It's been sold!} section of the blog if you're interested.

Saturday afternoon we stopped by our sister and brother-in-law's home and while Em and I chatted, Dave helped Tim and Dan replace some siding. We then rounded out the evening with a family dinner.

On Sunday I woke up at 5:30 a.m. and stayed awake...yikes. Where'd the old Joi go? I had energy nearly the entire day and Dave and I spent it completing errands and doing odds and ends.

I'm excited because today is my last day of school and then I'm off until next Monday. I'm very ready to put up our Christmas tree and get this holiday season a-movin'!

Tuesday Randoms

So yesterday I mentioned that David and I got to do a little shopping on our Friday off of school this past week. We hit up a handful of stores and I ran across some things for our little guy on the way. Dave's taken to calling him "little dude" and the name has stuck. The Big Lebowski may or may not have had a lot of influence on this nickname choice. Only my husband...

Anyhoo, we first made a stop at Bed Bath and Beyond and I score this pillow for $4! I really like it and envision it on the future glider. For $4 it's no biggie if it doesn't work in the long run.

It was on the clearance rack plus I used my 20% off coupon. And, p.s. just a little FYI...our BB&B takes as many coupons as you have items plus they never expire even if they have an expiration date on them. Good to know.

We then hit up Burlington Coat Factory and I scored the little dude a pair of adorable moccasin booties.

Who knows if he'll ever wear them in the right season but I just couldn't pass them up.

We also made stops at TJ Maxx and Hobby Lobby where I scored some fabulous pink and leopard print wrapping paper. I am really ready for Christmastime this year! I also saw a couple things that I thought you guys might like.

First is this set of keys. They are the exact ones that I bought in Spain a couple of years ago and framed in my bedroom.

Next up I spotted this pretty large stencil for around $15! If I had room somewhere in this tiny house of ours this may be something I'd try.

On Saturday David cleared out the baby's room, I had a long overdue lunch with a great group of ladies, and we celebrated my in-laws 32nd wedding anniversary with a great dinner.

(My cellphone used to take pretty decent pics until Dave dropped it in a sink full of water--whoops! It doesn't help that this room is tiny and it was nighttime, too. )

I was so thankful to my brother in law and father in law for helping David move a dresser from our master bedroom to the garage and help find the source of a leak in our car. We're blessed to have such handy and loving people in our lives.

On Sunday my grandparents and mom came up to meet us for lunch and my mom rocked her sewing skills to make me the bolster pillow I have been talking about for months {here and here}. Here's the Old Navy sarong that we used as fabric. Pics to come soon!
