Project Playroom: The After

Theron's playroom is complete! After starting nearly three months ago we have a completed room! It was pretty easy to put together once I decided on the fabric for the benches and for the no-sew roman shades.  I like color--you guys know that--so it should come as no surprise to any of you that this room has a lot of it!

We started with a room that looked like this [pre-Theron Drake]:

Which quickly turned into this:

And now finished, looks like this:

The benches, as you may recall, were inspired by Jen's phenomenal IKEA hack seen here, and custom built by my superstar Father-in law.  The robot pillow is from Land of Nod, the tribal pillows are from IKEA, the 'Never Let Me Go' pillow was from Brickyard Buffalo deal, and the Greek Key pillow I've had for years.

The Instagram poster size prints were purchased on Prinstagram and framed in poster sized frames from Michael's that I spray-painted gold.  The floor lamp next to the window was from CB2.

The "art" on the gallery wall was either made by me on PowerPoint [via multiple inspirations I ran across while on Pinterest], Hallmark greeting cards-turned-prints, an Old Navy  'Land of the Free' & Hallmark chevron shopping bag, a free online printable, or an abstract painting print via Etsy.   I saved money by reusing old frames I had stored away and didn't have to buy a single new one!

The sweet little table was mine when I was a kid that I recently spray-painted with chalkboard paint and the chair was a thrift store find from when I was pregnant.

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed a tour of Theron's playspace!

Project Playroom: No-Sew Faux Roman Shades

The playroom is still chugging right long.  We encountered a little speedbump this weekend when David was hit pretty hard with a brutal sinus infection that had him laid up the entire weekend.  Fortunately, he's on some meds and is getting some rest so that hopefully his cough, sneezing, and runny nose will hit the road soon. I'm very thankful that his fever already broke because he seemed miserable with that.  He said he doesn't remember feeling so sick.  Poor guy.

Plus, our littlest love developed a pretty nasty cough this weekend so he hasn't been the world's happiest camper.  In fact, we're taking him to the doctor today to make sure he doesn't have anything serious.  He's almost 10 months old and this is his first real sickness -- it's just as hard as I imagined it would be for me.  I want him to feel a-ok and it breaks my heart to know he's uncomfortable.  I guess that's a mother's job.

But, back to the playroom--today we're talking window treatments.  When the room was used an office we had nearly ceiling to floor drapery.  They were floral, girly, and I loved them.

However, with our new custom built benches I didn't think drapes would look right behind them.  In fact, there wasn't any room for them.

As I think you can see, the bench butts right up to the wall so ceiling to floor drapes wouldn't really make much sense.

Instead, I decided to order some fabric and make some no-sew roman shades.  As you can probably guess, I found a fabulous {and simple} tutorial for them on Pinterest:

Whitney, as a guest blogger on Adrianne's blog, walks you through her tutorial with helpful pictures and to-the-point instructions.

After Ther-bear went to bed one night I measured out the fabric with my sweet husband's assistance and then used my old Target Roman shade as a guide for the width.  I followed Whitney's tutorial to a T.

Remember, these are no-sew shades so anyone who can cut and glue can rock these!

Here is one of the finished shades in T's playroom.  Please excuse the holes that need patched and painted from the previous drapery hardware.

And here's a bigger shot of the room:

There is still a lot to be done, but I'm as pleased as can be about how it's coming along! I am still figuring out a color to paint the media unit and am gathering art inspiration for the walls.

And, for the life of me, I can't find any lighting I love.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Stay tuned for more progress!

Project Playroom: Seating

So, if you recall, this is what we are working with:

Our former office is in the process of being transformed into a playroom for our little spirited kiddo. I knew I wanted to recreate the IKEA expedit-turned-benches seating in Jen's playroom since we are super limited on space.  The only problem? Our closest IKEA is a cool 5 hours away.  Bummer sauce.  BUT, never fear when you have THE most talented father-in-law in all the land who can make anything in the world.

I showed him what I wanted, and we  customized the height, depth, and length to fit perfectly in our room.  And within a few weeks time, thanks to Grandpa Dan, Ther-bear had two custom benches just waiting to be upholstered.

I decided on this fabric to bring some color into an otherwise very dark room.  This weekend Dan brought up his fancy air compressor staple gun and basically upholstered both benches on his own.

 I helped just a smidge.

Dan's quite the perfectionist and vetoed my  method of "christmas present" upholstery ends.  He took the lead on the ends and made them look really finished.  He's the best.

I used Jen's suggestions of 2" foam from JoAnn Fabrics and MDF cut down to size from the Hardware Store.   The foam was pricey, and I've heard of other people going to hardware stores and buying boat foam and cutting it down to size.  Just a thought!

We've still got a lot to do to pull this room together but it's come a long way in just a few days!

Agenda:

-Art
-Paint TV Credenza
-Label bench bins [purchased at Target -- can't find them online anymore]
-PLAY!

Stay tuned!

Project Playroom: The Before

Well, Theron Drake is inching his way closer to the age where he's about to take off and never look back! It's nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time!  He wants us to walk him everywhere and I know one day he's just going to let go and run wild.

We can't wait to see him develop and are anxious to see his little world become bigger.  If you're familiar with NVD, then you know we live in a very modest sized Ranch style home, built in the 1960s.  It has been a perfect starter home and I adore it.

However, we don't have much space.  At all.  To give little T more room to play and be a typical boy, we decided to use our last bedroom-turned-office as a playroom.

When I decided to turn it into a playroom I had no plans. Nada.  That is, until I saw the crazy-awesome-phenomenal playroom belonging to Jen's boys of the super popular blog, iHeart Organizing.

Seriously--so fabulous I can't even take it!

I'm sure you guys are familiar with her and if somehow you aren't, you gotta check her out.  She's my organizational idol.  She is as sweet as she is organized, too.  Which is an added bonus, for sure.   Plus, she's had me on her blog roll and always sends a crowd my way...even when my blogging hiatus was in full effect.  Thanks, Jen!

To say I was blown away by her playroom is an understatement! I am using it as the jumping off point for Theron's space and many of her ideas will be incorporated into it.  I hope T's space looks even a fraction as good as Jen's boys' room.

When it was an office, the space looked like this:

And today, this is what we are working with:

Yikes.

If you're wondering, the curtains are for sale here, the dresser will be getting a makeover, and the pendant light and sofa are about to go bye-bye as well [I'm hoping to craigslist those bad boys].

I'll keep you posted as this space is transformed.

xoxo

UPDATE: Curtains sold.  Thanks for your interest!  Loveseat craigslist link and lamps craigslist link.
