Kitchen Island Addition

Hey guys! Happy Friday! Hope your week was absolutely fantastic...this was one of the BEST weeks of my life.

So remember that sweet little kitchen island my father in law made for us? You know, the one I painted pink?

Yup that's it!

Well, I finally added a makeshift towel bar. And when I say "I", I really mean my father in law. The towel bar was not a true towel bar but rather a cabinet pull from eBay. Score.

I couldn't find a towel bar at any big box store {Artie--we love the term "big box, " right?} that had the right dimensions for my sweet custom island. So a moment of ingenuity came to me {it happens ever so rarely} and it dawned on me that I could make a modern long cabinet pull do the trick.

I ordered it for about $10 bucks {including shipping}, it then sat all summer with Dave and I making plans to someday deal with it, and now finally my father in law came to the rescue and affixed it to the island.

I love this little addition and I think it makes the whole island look complete. Thanks, Dan!

I hope you all have a very happy weekend planned! Dave and I are attending a Blues' hockey game with friends, writing a paper/preparing a presentation for our master's class, and celebrating my paw paw's birthday!

xoxo

Yes, big box store. LOL! You can only say discount retailer so many times. :)

I love this ... I didn't realize it was pink though til' now. FABULOUS!

And you're right - that towel bar does put the perfect finishing touch on! :)

Have a great weekend!

Love this. What a clever idea. I think I gotta keep this in mind. We don't have an island, but I think it would also work on the end of the cabinetry. Clever.

Awesome addition and so clever! Quick question about your painted cabinets ... have you noticed any chipping and did you paint the insides?

I have solid oak cabinets that are nice but not my style and I'd like to paint them white but am afraid they'll chip/ding/scratch overtime.

Working at an architect firm, I call those stores "big box" stores too.
Gah, that kitchen island seriously makes my heart pitter patter. I have an unhealthy obsession with wood- and that wood grain top is just SO beautiful. Do you know what kind of wood your FIL used for this?
Loving the towel bar, BTW.

@Desert Domicile-We haven't experienced any chipping, but we prepared the cabinets pretty good to be painted! We stripped the old finish and sanded them down. We then used an oil based primer and paint. The oil based paint wasn't difficult to work with as some people suggest and it cures pretty hard with no brushstrokes. I love it!

@Leslie G-I think he used pine. I can get back to you for sure, though. I know the top of the island was already one piece...it was in the tabletop section of lumber at Lowe's for a little kid's table. It fit the bill perfectly. : )

@Jonalynn-They are from Anthropologie.

Aren't you a smarty pants! I think the pull looks better than a bar would have...the pull fits the scale of the island perfectly!

I like the towels just as much as the bar!

Hi Joi...I found you somehow on Design Sponge but I'm not really sure how. :o) I am so impressed by your kitchen redo. It was done on a budget but certainly doesn't look like it. I was wondering if you changed the hinges on your cabinets when you painted them? I have hinges similar to yours and am starting a small kitchen reno soon. I'm stumped as to what to do about my hinges. They are sort of a dark gold color and I would love for them to just go away. Any input you could share would be so appreciated. I'm a fairly new blogger and when I find a blog such as yours I feel like I've hit the jackpot! Thanks for your time ~ Ann
