Going Green or Going Trendy?

Ahhhhhhh!!!! Let me preface my statements by saying that I love our earth and do my part in conserving energy and all that fun stuff. But, if I hear/see/read about people "going green" for much longer I'm going to be driven mad.

I've talked to a lot of people about my frustration over this "trend" and many people have said "who cares, at least it gets people thinking smart and recycling/conserving etc."

I get it, I know it's probably good for the environment-yada, yada, yada. But in my eyes, most people are using this as a new trend, that sadly will go away someday. I remember being in grade school and using the recycled paper and turning in tabs off of soda cans! Since when did it become good for the environment to "go green" only since, let's say, 2007??? Haven't we always known that plastic bags were wasteful, driving too much pollutes, using water and electricity over abundantly is excessive? Come on, we've all known this. This is not new news. But because we now have bags that say "I'm Not a Plastic Bag, Reduce*Reuse*Recycle, etc. etc. etc..." saving the world has now become important. It's like the label of this time, much like some people assume Coach, Gucci, or Louis Vuitton is.

Uggh-I'm just so aggravated and annoyed with this whole concept...so sorry if it sounds like I'm Patty the Pessimist--I promise, I'm really not ;-) .

I think Abby Rathbun from the Louisville Cardinal sums it up pretty nicely when she said this in an article, "Going green isn't like skinny jeans and oversized sunglasses - it isn't a fad. Go ahead and make the world a better place but don't praise your own efforts. Let Kermit do all the bragging about being green."

Kudos to you, Abby!

Go ahead and leave a comment, I can take it : ).

I agree, it seems like it's just trendy. It bugs me that people feel the need to buy special bags - which used energy to be manufactured for this special purpose!! - instead of bringing bags they already had to go shopping.

Definitely a trend. I love seeing Hollywood young wearing go green shirts but owning 7 cars!

Or how about those who buy McMansions with a gazilion rooms to heat and cool and cars in the driveway including an SUV or two, then preach to everyone else how important it is to save the earth?

I agree that it's sad that going green is so "in".....it should be a way of life, not a trend.

I remember doing a persuasive speech in middle school for speech class (almost 20 yrs ago!), trying to convince peeps to recycle....

You know what's funny, is that people are building new "green" houses (which in the long run will be beneficial, I'm sure). But how about recycling by just buying a house that already exists? Isn't that being green?

ITA! I think it's become tres trendy to go green. I have to admit, I'm no "greenie," but I do recycle, and after I learned how long plastic bags take to break down, I'm all all about buying those organic bags at the grocery store! Although, I'm probably polluting the environment in some other way! ;)

I couldn't agree with you more! I was just thinking about that yesterday. It just seems like people are hopping on the band wagon b/c it's so trendy now. Seriously, we thought going green would be trendy? Crazy. I do also love how people pass off being stingy as being "green".
